Turner, Tina (1939 - ) USA / Music star / ZH

The American singer has lived in Zurich since 1986, on the Goldküste, the most fashionable district of the Swiss economic capital. Born Anna Mae Bullock in 1939, she came from a family of tenant farmers in the American Middle West. During high school in Saint Louis, she met Ike Turner and sang in his rock group. They became known internationally in 1969, when they opened for the Rolling Stones. But Tina's relationship with Ike became unbearable and she left him in 1975, with nothing but 36 cents and gas card in her pocket.

She survived by performing in night clubs and managed to climb her way back to the top with the help of Buddhist chants and her manager Roger Davies. First there was Private Dancer in 1984, featuring such hits as What's Love got to do with it? Then she appeared in film with Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome, and went on tour in 1987, beating all box office records. In 1991, the Comeback Queen released her autobiography, which soon became a bestseller and was the basis of the 1993 film What's Love Got To Do With It?

After a period of silence, Tina made a North American tour in 1997 and rose to the top of the charts. The singer lives with a Swiss business man in a luxurious villa on the lakeshore in Zurich. She is happy to relax after her musical tours in a reasonable tax environment, for she only pays taxes on a 200,000 CHF income, while her fortune tops 200 million. During a concert in Zurich in July, 2000, she announced that she was ending her music career. She did say, however, that stage performances were not out of the question, such as for charity concerts.
