Stein-am-Rhein : arrival, information and accommodation
Home > Tourist Guide > Table of contents > Northeast > Stein-am-Rhein and around > Arrival and hotels

At least six boats a day in summer arrive at Stein-am-Rhein, three from Kreuzlingen upriver and three from Schaffhausen downriver. Otherwise, Stein-am-Rhein’s train station – connected to Schaffhausen and Winterthur, Kreuzlingen and St Gallen – is on the southern bank of the Rhine, a couple of minutes’ walk from the bridge. The tiny tourist office is at Oberstadt 9 (Mon–Fri 9–11am & 2–5pm; 052/741 28 35); opposite, the Kiosk Charregass (see “Eating and Drinking” below), offers Internet access (Fr.1.25 for 5min).

There are three riverside campsites within a few kilometres of the village: the nearest is Grenzstein, about 1km east (052/741 51 44, fax 741 45 52) and open year-round; sites at Wagenhausen, 2km west (052/741 42 71, fax 741 41 57; April–Oct), and the Hüttenberg at Eschenz, 2km east (052/741 23 37; year-round), are both rated with five stars. The HI hostel at Hemishoferstrasse 87, about fifteen minutes’ walk due east from Understadt (052/741 12 55, fax 741 51 40; a; March–Oct), has dorms from Fr.23. The least expensive hotel is the Mühlethal on Öhningerstrasse 250m east of Rathausplatz (052/741 27 25, fax 741 33 63; b), with a good restaurant serving inexpensive wood-fired pizza (closed Mon). There are a few beds above the Schiff restaurant beside the quay (052/741 22 73, fax 741 45 52; b), which also has a pleasant garden for riverside dining, while 100m east along the waterfront is the Rheingerbe (052/741 29 91, fax 741 21 66; b), an old wood-beamed house with some rooms overlooking the Rhine. The Adler is directly on Rathausplatz (052/742 61 61, fax 741 44 40; c), its brilliantly decorated facade sheltering pine-decor rooms which are surprisingly plain and ordinary, though comfortable enough.
