There are two campsites easily accessible from the city, both northeast on the Rive Gauche lakefront and both accessible on bus #E in Zone 31 (Fr.4). The first – 7km from town – is Pointe-à-la-Bise, on Chemin de la Bise in Vésanaz (022/752 12 96; April–Oct). Another 7km on, a short walk beyond the terminus of bus #E in Hermance and a few metres before the French frontier, is Camping d’Hermance, Rue du Nord 44 (%022/751 14 83; April–Sept), which has free access to the lake.

There are plenty of hostel beds in Geneva, partly because so many student dorms open their doors to visitors out of term-time. The tourist office brochure Young People lists 24 places (including six women-only hostels). The brand-new City Hostel is due to open in the year 2000 at 2 Rue Ferrier (022/789 22 93, info@cityhotel.ch, www.
cityhostel.ch
), with dorms from Fr.24, Internet access, washing facilities and more.

Centre Masaryk, 11 Avenue de la Paix (022/733 07 72). Some 2km north of town and a little institutional, with Fr.27 dorms and inexpensive rooms. a.

Cité Universitaire, 46 Avenue Miremont (022/839 22 22, fax 839 22 23). Gigantic 500-bed behemoth nearly 3km south of the centre. Dorm beds for individuals are Fr.16 in July & August only (Sept–June groups only), but there are plenty of cut-price singles, doubles and studios year-round. Breakfast is extra. Bus #3 to Champel. a.

Forget Me Not, 8 Rue Vignier (022/320 93 55, fax 781 46 45). Rock-bottom backpackers’ hostel, with dorms from Fr.25 and doubles from Fr.80. Tram #13 to Plainpalais. a.

HI hostel, 30 Rue Rothschild (%022/732 62 60, fax 738 39 87). Open year-round in a good location in the north of the Pâquis, with dorm beds Fr.23 including breakfast. Big, bustling and well maintained. Bus #1 to Wilson. a.

Home St Pierre, 4 Cour St Pierre (%022/310 37 07). Women-only hostel in the heart of the Old Town next to the cathedral, with dorm beds from Fr.22 excluding breakfast, and a few rooms. Reception closed noon–4pm. a.
